Dereks Advice

Choose the right photographer for you

Introducing our photography expert Derek Pelling of Derek Pelling Photography
Fantastic pictures can cost a lot, but will last a lifetime. When it comes to choosing your wedding photographer there are a few things you need to take into account, the most obvious are cost and style.

Weddings are expensive and when it comes to your photographs, it's worth spending what you can afford as these images are your memories. Your photographer will capture those special images of the day, from the intimate moments of the ceremony to the detail of your shoes and flowers, to an overview of the day that over the years you'll enjoy looking back at and remembering - your perfect day.

My top tips

1. When it comes to style everybody has their ideal. Every photographer is different from the reportage style to
high-end art. Look through photographers portfolios online, go to wedding fayres and meet them in person.
I believe it's very important to meet your photographer as you need to make sure you like them and they like you! A great relationship between you both is essential for getting those perfect pictures. You'll be relaxed and therefore your photographs will be natural and real.

2. Once you've found a style that works for you and a photographer you're happy with your set! Your photographer will know what photographs to get but it's worth finding your own fun ideas, unusual group shots, props you may want to use, a certain part of the venue maybe, your photographer will be happy to work with you as they want to get the best possible images of your day.

3. Check how many images you'll receive too. Some photographers will supply only a 100 photographs from a full day. I generally supply around 500, but never a set amount as every wedding is unique.

4. Have a plan! Work with your photographer to have a plan for your day, a list of essential must have shots, the family groups, those who may have travelled from afar, any surprises that maybe planned during the day. But above all else be flexible, things may not run to time, the weather may not play ball. If you've chosen the right photographer they'll work around all of these with ease and keep you smiling and relaxed.

5. All in all make sure you're 100% happy and comfortable, don't forget your photographer will be with you for virtually the whole day so an understanding of what you and they expect is essential.

Most of all relax and enjoy your day, it's over in a flash, but your photographs will last forever.
